Summer Share 2011 – Week 7

This week we have a very special bag.  Blueberries and peaches came on real quick this week with the heat, so we’ll be featuring both.

The blueberries are coming fresh from Moreland Fruit Farm in Moreland Township and Vogley’s Berries in East Sparta, just outside of Canton.  Both are what’s called a “Michigan High Bush” variety, which grow tall, berry filled bushes.  This is in contrast to the wild blueberry plants that are native to Maine.  Those grow in rocky soils in cool climate about a foot off the ground.  That is truly back-breaking labor to pick those!  Those don’t grow around here.

We also have the first of this year’s Cling Peaches.  These are coming from Eschleman Fruit Farm in Clyde, Ohio (near Sandusky).  These are small peaches where the flesh “clings” to the pit.  I call them paper-towel peaches.  They are extremely juicy and tasty, but they make a mess to eat.  For all of last year’s members, I’m sure you remember the small ugly peaches that changed your opinion of fresh fruit!

This week we will also feature chickens again…with one little exception.  We will have about 75% chickens and 25% grassfed beef roasts.  Yesterday’s thunderstorms killed a lot of my chickens for this week!  The birds can tolerate light rains, but in thunderstorms they get themselves worked up and they pile up to try to stay dry.  The ones on the bottom of the pile suffocate.  Yesterday my farmer lost 170 chickens in one storm as they got about an inch of rain in 20 minutes in Baltic Township.

The chickens will be about 4.5 lbs; some much bigger.  The roasts are about 3 lbs each.   Please ask for the roast at the back of the truck if you want it.
