Summer Share 2011 – Week 14

Sweet Corn, Ground Beef, Potatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Peaches

It is hard to believe that sweet corn season is already coming to an end.  This week will likely be the last week that we’ll get to feature this product.  Don’t worry though…just this past Monday some of my producers blanched and froze 1,500 lbs of sweet corn kernels to use in the Winter CSA (to be announced first week of September).

This week we also have the return of grassfed ground beef.  The animals are being cut today and tomorrow, so I can’t state for sure yet that we will have extra ground beef for sale on the back of the truck, but we will try to.  We will certainly have pork chops and Italian sausage if you are looking for meats for the Labor Day cookout!

This week we also have some beautiful organic yukon gold potatoes, green beans, and green bell peppers.

Finally, the larges have a special treat this week.   Being that it is a holiday weekend and that nothing is better on a summer day than some great BBQ, we’ll be featuring Berkshire Pork shoulders (boston butt roast).  These well marbled cuts are about 3.5 to 4 lbs each.  They are great braised, smoked, or in the slow cooker.  Pair them with some homemade coleslaw or spicy asian slaw (kimchee style) and some BBQ sauce and you are set.

BBQ sauce.  Man I can’t stand Sweet Baby Ray’s or all the high fructose corn syrup based sauces at the grocery store.  Because I like you guys more than that, I’ve been working with one of our canning partners – Clark Pope Catering – for months on a from-scratch tomato based barbecue sauce.  This sauce is outstanding!  It is what Fresh Fork is all about.  Made from fresh Ohio paste tomatoes, onions, vinegar, and a proprietary blend of seasonings, this sauce is quite tasty.  It hits your tongue on the slightly sweet side and finishes smokey and tangy, with just a bit of heat to it.  Each large customer will receive a 16oz jar of this unique barbecue sauce.  Additional jars will be for sale at the table at the back of the truck for $7.
